With all the stress and change at the beginning of the school year, I’ve been writing notes for Miss O in her lunch every day. Mr. D can’t yet read but his teachers asked for notes to read to kids when they miss their families.
The notes I find myself writing aren’t exquisite masterpieces that have any poetic resonance. They are simply affirmations in the stye of The Help by Kathryn Stockett
To the degree that I’ve figured out what works best, it is things that are specific, not too aspirational, and that resonate with what they might already believe about themselves. Writing them for my children is not very hard.
But if I was to turn the lens around the other way and have to pick three things to say to myself? Well, it’s a hard practice. So I’ve written some down for you all. Pick three things that you could really believe about yourself. Just so you know, I’ve written these with you all in mind:
You are clever.
You are kind.
You bring out the best in others.
You have come so far and are so generous to share your lessons with others.
You are a bright light.
You make others laugh.
You make others cry, in the best way ever.
You are such a good encourager.
You make the world a better place.
You are resourceful.
You are resilient.
You are creative.
You are so faithful.
You are a good listener.
You are wise.
You are patient.
You are a great storyteller.
You can figure anything out.
You have integrity.
You are empathetic.
You carry your load well.
You are strong.
You are brave.
You make me laugh.
You are a person I am delighted to know.
Really — pick three. Write them down and look at them when you eat lunch. I have it on good authority that they make the day better.
The podcast I did with Dr. Vicki Atkinson about how to Savor September goes nicely with lunch as well: Episode 35: September … Savor with Vicki and Wynne
Love all of these affirmations!
They remind me of the ones I tried to write to myself when I was first teaching myself to like myself. At first I really, no, REALLY, struggled to believe them, but because I chose the believable ones for me, I came to believe. It’s amazing the power affirmations can have!
Thank you for sharing these with us!

Affirmations are just a few words strung together in a meaningful way, but what great power they have in helping us. I love your idea of picking three to think about over lunch. I’ll be back later to pick. I love them all. It will be hard to choose. Thank you for this Wynne. I believe they all apply to you.

Thank you Wynne. I think the majority of us try to make a positive difference. And even though these are small actions that may go unnoticed they touch someone somewhere. And there in begins the ripple of difference. It’s beautiful isn’t it.
Your writing and wisdom are also a light. As far as picking, I just can’t pick 3. They’re all so good. I’m printing it out as daily reminders. Thank you for this my friend! 💕

What a Great Friday idea! Affirmations to ourselves is a very good tool for Self-Care. We get so busy taking care of others and putting all our time and energy into others or jobs, we forget to be kind to ourselves and serve ourselves as well. Our Mental health Always Comes first! If we can’t take care of ourselves Mentally, we are no good to anyone else.

I’ve said this before but WordPress needs a love button! On really crazy days, can I pick more than 3. I read your list and crazy as it sounds, I felt lifted up. Let me set the stage: I was listening in to a work status meeting with 30 other people on the call, which I’m usually anxious about. I multitasked by reading your post, yea not a very good office thing to do, but I read the notes and I instantly felt better. Love it Wynne.

Because you mentioned “The Help,” I find myself wanting to swap out every “are” for an “is.” I just think the affirmations flow better that way.

I think I have been remiss in not using self-affirmation enough, Wynne, so thanks for this post and your list, I have picked my 3 (for today) and will be actively using them. 🙂

Those are such wonderful affirmations. When Michael Phelps was working through depression he said he had several affirmations. He would say them every time he went through a doorway. Think about that! Lots of affirmations. FYI, my mom packed Bible versus in our lunch boxes.

How interesting about Michael Phelps and doorways as a touch point. That repetition must do a lot to help groove it. And Bible verses is a good one too. Thanks, Elizabeth!

Love it! When each of my kids turned 25, I made a list of their best characteristics, their positive personality traits, etc. Then I copied/pasted it into a text– “Happy 25th Birthday! 25 Reasons you are awesome: ” and listed the affirmations, numbered in no particular order. I wanted the list on their phone so they could pull it up at any time. I picked age 25 partly because it seemed to be a turning point into true adulthood, but also because I didn’t think of it until my 1st kid was reaching that age, lol. I still have one kid who hasn’t had her 25th birthday yet, so one more to go! I might steal some of your words!

You are a great mom, Gwen! What a great idea for the 25th and I love the reasoning and how you made it work for the age that it occurred to you! Borrow away, my friend! ❤

Oh, what a gift for your children! Today is my granddaughter’s 30th birthday and friends and family were asked to write memory letters. My closing words to her were: “In closing, may I say that if you ever get tempted to forget how fabulous you are, drag out this letter and reread it to remind yourself about just how loved and lovable you are. You deserve all the love that’s out there waiting for you to claim it. Or just call me up. I’ll remind you.” She texted a photo of herself in tears while she was reading it. I confess—her response brought a tear to my own eye. So much love flowing back and forth! 🥰

Oh, the power of positive thinking! One of my favorite quotes from Abraham Hicks is,”We are wanting to take you beyond the need to see it before you can believe it. We want you understand that if you believe it then you will see it.” In my early days of trying to believe it, I employed an affirmation from Jose Silva, “Every day in every way, I am getting better, better, and better.” Even decades later, I remember the Silva quote, and somehow, magically, whatever is ailing me at the moment dissolves into nothingness. Thanks for compiling this wonderful list, Wynne!

Ah, I love the idea of turning it around – believe it and then see it. Such a great (and sometimes difficult) practice. Love your affirmation – and that it makes all the difference. A beautiful testament to how powerful our thoughts are!! Love this great comment! ❤ ❤ ❤

I love all these, Wynne, and began using daily affirmations over-60 as I became more aware of my negative self-chatter and the damage it’s done. These last 12 months, moving alone to a foreign country that speaks a different language saw my fear and self-doubt ramp up big-time. It has helped to remind myself:
“You can do this.” (Anything!)
“You are smart.”
“You are brave.”
I don’t always believe it, but I am getting better. Thank you for sharing this post. ❤️
