Not Too Hot, Not Too Cold: Medium Water

Use your passion to create a job.” – Lailah Gifty Akita

Recently, six-year-old Mr. D announced to his sister and me that he wanted to open a shop. After confessing that he didn’t know what he wanted to sell, we started brainstorming ideas based on his skills and interests.

Ten-year-old Miss O came up with the winning product: medium water. Mr. D’s recent foray into learning how to cook has led him to a new recipe that he calls medium water. He boils water for hot drinks and then adds ice so it isn’t too hot.

He sometimes asks people who come over if they’d like medium water. Funny that it usually takes some explanation what it is.

But I think with enough passion, he can pitch this idea. How about these taglines?

  • Mr. D’s Tepid Tea: All the enjoyment, none of the risk.
  • Mr. D’s Just Right Café: Why wait to sip your favorite beverage?
  • Mr. D’s Medium Water: Order a tall or a short, and get it medium

In Seattle, land of the coffee shops, where the weather is usually not too hot or not too cold, it actually might fly! Or perhaps the response might be lukewarm. If he ever does it, I’ll let you know.

  1. I love this idea! Everyone is usually finished their drinks and ready to leave, while I’m still waiting for my tea to cool down. How about, “Goldilocks Drinks – Not too hot, Not too Cold, Medium – Just Right!”

  2. I love Mr. D’s idea. The scientist in me is excited to know that a six year-old is learning about thermodynamics his way. In a few years, he’s gonna be sitting in a science class and he’s gonna remember how he figured out. Love the curiosity and wonder. Thanks for the boost on a Monday to begin the week.

    1. I love that this spoke to the scientist in you, Clay! I’ve been telling Duncan about the solid/liquid/gas transformation as we do this. It doesn’t feel like that’s landed yet but it is an interesting science lesson, isn’t it?

  3. He will go far! Sounds like my son. He used to trawl shops for things in bulk – like small packs of sweets or 10 trendy shoe laces. Split the packs into single items & sell them to his mates.

  4. How sweet! I remember going door-to-door in my neighborhood as a child trying to see crafted items… I don’t anyone ever bit, but it was fun to try. Best of luck to Mr. D in his endeavors!

  7. I’m laughing at Tepid Tea. You all might actually be onto something! 🤣

I do like that you nurture this sense of exploration and creativity with your kids and let them pursue their ideas. You just never know where it will lead them to!

  8. “Medium Water”–too funny! And your tag lines? GENIUS! Do you have a background in advertising?! Tell Mr. D. he has a fan of medium water in Ohio. I too have discovered the wisdom of making strong tea with less boiling water, then adding cold water when the tea has steeped. It’s really the best way to make a cup of tea. 😁
