Moral of the Story

Follow your inner moonlight; don’t hide the madness.” – Allen Ginsberg

My 6-year-old daughter told me a story she heard from her Parkour coach, Lewis.

Lewis and his brother were at a water park. On one slide, there was a man and his daughter in front of them. The man, who was really big, put his daughter on his lap and pushed off when it was his turn.

When it was Lewis’ turn, he found that the man had gotten stuck and he had to push him all the way down the slide. At the bottom the man said, “That was fun!”

My daughter then turned to me and said, “Do you know what the moral of the story is?” I waited with baited breath until she revealed, “When you go to a water park, you’ve got to have fun!”

Ha, ha, ha. Not the moral I was expecting. But we all get to have different takeaways on this thing called life!

  1. Not quite the same takeaway I had but filled with deep insight for a six year old!

And you buried the lead: Your daughter has a parkour coach?! That is awesome. You need to tell us more!

    1. I hadn’t thought about Parkour as being a lead — but it has been life-saving during this pandemic. When everything else shutdown (like the gymnastics she was doing), Parkour was the first in-person class to be advertised and I desperately signed her up. As my daughter proudly tells everyone, Parkour is French for “obstacle” and so they use the outdoor space at the local community center as their training grounds – bike racks, the window ledges, stair cases. She has gone once a week for a year near (plus some camps) and it’s been outside 90% of the time. It’s a great pandemic activity and the coaches have all been delightful!

All of this is through Kong Academy (kongacademy.org ) which is a local to Seattle organization but there are some virtual classes. I bet T would LOVE Parkour!

      1. Thanks Wynne. I’ll have to look into it. A good friend shared a nearby indoor parkor facility as a suggested activity for T given he is so damn hyperactive and basically does parkour style moves at home and outdoors. When COVID slows down in our area, I’ll have to look it up. I bet he’ll enjoy it too like your daughter!

  2. Love it! What a sweetie.
My son came home from school, evidently having learned the parable of Jesus healing the leper. He told me: “Leopard seeds are bad. They come from leopards, but it’s okay. Jesus can take care of it.” 😛
