Thrilled to Meet You

When people show you who they are, believe them.” – Maya Angelou

They say that one should never meet their heroes. But they, whoever they are, must not have met Barbara Nickless. I love her thrillers because her characters are a great mix of smart, brave, and unstoppable. I discovered that Barbara is also smart, brave, and unstoppable when Vicki and I were lucky enough to get to talk with her on Episode 108 of the Sharing the Heart of the Matter podcast: The Drowning Game with Barbara Nickless.

Barbara’s fascinating resume includes roles as a technical writer, instructional designer, raptor rehabilitator, piano teacher, performer, sword fighter, and Director of Education for the country’s largest public astronomical observatory.

She shares her journey to becoming a best-selling author of thrillers and how devastating losses have led to new opportunities.

Barbara also discusses how writing helps process experiences and how she has taught writing to combat veterans.

We delve into her creative fuel that has led to nine novels in ten years, and her wholehearted investment in research and writing, which shines through in her characters’ internal growth.

Join us as we explore the scenic and beautiful places that inspire Barbara’s best-selling novels. You won’t want to miss this insightful and inspiring conversation!

We know you’ll love it!

      1. Yes, I found her approach to be very interesting, particularly in discovering her own best writing format, which doesn’t align with some popular approaches!

      2. Yes, her approach of finding her own way echoes my own path, so I relate to that way of thinking

  3. Choosing heros? One must choose wisely, as the Knight Templar said in an Indiana Jones film. Congratulations on picking the right one.

  4. I can barely wrap my head around 9 books in 10 years. How many characters is that? 😊 Whatever it is, I marvel at Barbara’s skill, imagination and endless energy to achieve all of this. I love the term “discovery writing!” That is me, 100%. I also love those “moments” when something is easy, it just comes from nowhere, and you say yes! (And get a glass of wine, haha). I had that happen recently and it sure spurs you on. Thanks Wynne and Vicki for another great podcast.

  5. Another inspiring interview. I found myself nodding my head agreeing with everything Barbara had to say as I listened. My take away is this, “At the end of the day we all want to feel good about who we are in the world.” I truly believe that is why most of us write. It was so lovely to meet Barbara and listen to what she has to say. I also feel that spending time with like-minded people fuels the fire within us. Thanks for these terrific podcasts!

  6. I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast and loved meeting Barbara. Wow, indeed, with everything she has accomplished! I love mysteries and thrillers, so I just ordered the paperback of The Drowning Game. We’ve all heard the phrase, “When one door closes another door opens.” Well, I loved the concept of “finding your window.” So inspiring! Thanks to you all for a terrific podcast! ❤️

  7. This was a wonderful conversation to listen to on my cloudy morning commute to work. I love the quote shared by Doctorow. It’s a great motto not just for writing but life itself.

I also loved Barbara’s advice: “You’re more than you realize.” Another great pick me upper. And connects so nicely to your comment about meeting your heroes. I love how you and Vicki are using your platform not just for great conversations but to connect with those who’ve inspired you. A great way to march to your next 100th episode milestone!
