A re-run of my dad’s humor cards. They make me chuckle all over again – so I hope you enjoy them whether it’s the first time or second (first posted on 4/24/2022).
The backstory: My dad was a Presbyterian pastor for 40 years. He kept a well curated stack of humor cards – little stories he heard, found or saw and then typed onto 5×7 cards. Then he wrote in the margins when he used that particular item. His humor was often an easy way to settle in to something deeper – by laughing and thinking about the buried truth in these little nuggets, it paved the way to an open heart.
God in Advertising
A Ft. Lauderdale advertising agency launched a billboard campaign (including the inside and outside of buses) that included these messages from God:
- Let’s Meet at My House Sunday before the Game – God
- What part of “Thou Shalt Not…” Didn’t You Understand? – God
- We Need to Talk – God
- Will the Road You’re on Get You to My Place? – God
- That “Love Thy Neighbor” Thing, I Meant It – God
- Follow Me – God
- Tell the Kids I Love Them – God
- My Way is the Highway – God
- Need Directions? – God
- You Think It’s Hot Here? – God
- C’mon Over and Bring the Kids – God
- Have You Read My #1 Best Seller? There Will be a Test – God
Of course there is a test. It is called life. The problem is, I think I need to cram for the exam!

Oh, Dr. Stein, I think you’ve aced the test…

All good, Wynne. Being tested on the Best Seller is the daily challenge!

It’s a practical test – written tests aren’t valid… Continuous assessment, with hundreds of would-be-assessors making their judgements… The real assessor has taken the test, passed it with full marks… and is disappointed but OK with the questions I regularly get wrong!

Love all of these…but #5 spoke to me especially…I have a friend who saw some aggressive shoving recently on a public bus and the reminder to “Love Thy Neighbor” while flying, riding – buses, plains, trains…whatever…seems, sadly, necessary these days.
What a fun ad agency to devise these quips. Are they hiring? Sounds like my kind of people! 🥰

I love your addition of planes, trains and buses. Right – love them everywhere – and for goodness sakes, don’t shoot them!

These are all fantastic, Wynne. I think my favorite is Tell the Kids I Love Them. Don’t we all need that reminder on occasion? 😊

Yes – we all need that reminder! Happy Sunday, Erin!

It’s hard to pick a favorite this time—they’re ALL great! How good can a God without a sense of humor be? 🤔

Very creative and very timely . . . always curious how your father used those in his ministry?

Mary – such a good question. One of these days I’ll post a full sermon of my dad’s and maybe it’ll answer how he snuck little gems in!
