Does anyone remember the car cake when our car turned 100,000 miles and we made a cake for it?
After we blew out the candles, Miss O turned to me and asked, “Are you going to be alive when this happens to me?”
Oh boy. I thought I better not go with the reply that she better get a used car with a lot of miles already on it. So after thinking about it for a few weeks, I’ve written my answer on Wise & Shine: The Next 100,000 Miles
This was such a beautiful and heartfelt post, Wynne. I love the use of mileage and the drive as a metaphor for life itself.
Ms O asks such smart and tough questions and your reflection of it is thoughtful and wise. I love that you open yourself to the detours and the different paths life may take.
Who knows indeed whether we’ll all make it to the next 100,000 miles – and it’s not a matter of just age – but being open to the journey is part of the joy and adventure of life.

Thank you, Ab! What a lovely compliment coming from you. I couldn’t agree with you more that it’s about being open to the journey and I try to remember that but wow is it easy to get into a groove (or rut) and forget!
Hope you are having a great week!

Well the good news is my 17 yo son just bought his first car and it had 104000 miles already on it. You’ll probably make it.

What a lovely post. It’s a tricky line to straddle with our children, answering questions with honesty while still protecting tender hearts from realities that will arrive later. “I hope so” is a good answer.

Their tender hearts indeed – yes, you nailed it. It is a tricky line. And probably one worth continuing to try to walk – honest and gentle! Thanks, Michelle!
