The Story of Life

Just because they are a story doesn’t mean they’re not real.” – H. M. Bouwman

I was listening to Brené Brown’s podcast, Dare to Lead last night and the first question she asked her guest was, “Tell us your story.”

It is probably an offshoot of my dad – who loved parables more than directives and could tell a great story – but I love stories. Hearing them, telling them and the way they stick with you. Like yesterday, I read Ally Bean’s story of the self-scan mishap and then when I went to the grocery store, I chuckled all the way through check out.

So stories are the topic of my post this week for Wise & Shine: The Power of Story.

  1. As a potato chip lover, I’m willing to go to jail for a scanner mishap!

Jokes aside, stories play such an important role in society – dating as far back as elders of the community passing on the tribe’s history and culture down to the next generation.

It’s also a great tool to bring us together rather than divide us, hopefully. I can see how that story of your ex husbands childhood fire stuck with you as well as your dad’s many wonderful stories and jokes. We can all only wish to be blessed with such richness in our lives, that I know you are now passing down to Miss O and Mr D.

    1. Great point about the cultural and spiritual traditions behind stories, Ab.

And I can’t say yes, yes, yes about stories as a tool to bring us together. I’m so glad you said that – so right on!

  2. It seems as if stories are our most beloved legacy and I’m not sure I would know who I was if for some reason I forgot my stories. Religions is story, families are stories, relationships are stories. Such a potent topic. Hugs, C
