Another installment from my dad’s humor cards.
The backstory: My dad was a Presbyterian pastor for 40 years. He kept a well curated stack of humor cards – little stories or observations that he typed onto 5×7 cards. Then he wrote in the margins when he used that particular item. His humor was often an easy way to settle in to something deeper – by laughing and thinking about the buried truth in these little nuggets, it paved the way to an open heart.
When we cleaned out his desk after he died 7 years ago, I was lucky enough to stumble on this stack. I pull it out regularly to have a little laugh with my dear Dad. Now when I post one of them, I write my note next to his and it feels like a continuation.
Children
A mother took her three-year-old daughter to church for the first time. The church lights were lowered, and then the choir came down the aisle carrying lighted candles.
All was quiet until the little one started to sing in a loud voice, “Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you…”

One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was tucking her small boy into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, “Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?”
The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug. “I can’t, Dear,” she said. “I have to sleep in Daddy’s room.”
A long silence was broken at last by his shaky little voice, “The big baby.”
More good laughs. Much needed after watching the Mariners’ game last night. 18 innings of hope amidst amazing pitching from both sides. 😥

Oh, you said it, Jane! Yes, that was amazing pitching. And I figure it’s kinda like we played 2 playoff games in one since it went so long. Wowsa!

Thank you, Wynne! Where would we be on Sunday mornings without your Dad’s humor? I so appreciate you sharing…and this week’s installment? LOVE…and although I hate to pick a favorite, “the big baby” kinda wins. xo! ❤

My favorite of the two too, Vicki! Where would we be without this humor? The stack of unused cards is getting pretty small…
Hope you have a lovely Sunday my friend!

Here is a follow-up to the second story, Wynne.
Our next-door neighbor told her young son that she needed to lay down. Once her nap was over, he inquired, “Mom, did you have a good lay?”
Lie or lay — a big difference.

Those are both so cute! I love them both, and Dr. Stein’s comment was the perfect follow-up. Off to start my Sunday with a smile now. 😄

Big Baby wins my vote too! But the good lay question is right up on the top of my great-chuckles list. Ah, the mouths of babes!

Maybe we spend our lives just trying to get back to their easy humor… 🙂

Both are “out of the mouths of babes” 😀 They remind me of what Seinfeld once said “A two-year-old is kind of like having a blender, but you don’t have a top for it.” 😀

What a great Seinfeldism. I confess though—sometimes I feel just like that two-year old! 🤪

And sometimes I feel like the blender without the top 😛
