Photos of the Week: August 8

The child’s awe-filled relationship to the natural world is a laboratory for deep learning about the systems of life, essential to our survival.” – Dacher Keltner

We are loving our time exploring the natural world on Whidbey Island!

Seven-year-old Mr. D is pretty good at handling his own paddleboard.

Almost 11-year-old Miss O shows how strong she is by paddling her 87-year-old grandmother around the bay.

There are two wild guys in the water — only one is likely to catch a fish. Second picture is the Deception Pass bridge.

Trinity Lutheran Church sure knows how to match the spirit of the season!

  1. I can’t believe it’s August! School starts for me next week and I’m kind of looking forward to it. It looks like you used your summer super well and your kids had a great time and I’m sure you did too. We all need the lifeguard. Thanks for the reminder. Have a great week.

    1. Wow – next week?! I always feel the comfort of going back to a rhythm when school starts and I’m guessing you do too. I think it’s easier to go back to school when you know you’ve made the days count and I know you have, Clay!

      1. Thank you Wynne. I think I’m looking forward to a schedule for six days a week. I’m looking forward to learning and growing alongside kids push me to be better. I think I’m going to miss it when I finally retire in four years. Until then, I’ll keep making the days count. Thanks for the encouragement.

      1. Yes, it’ a wonderful environment for kids. My kids and I would spend hours each day at the beach in the summer. They’d have their imaginations to play with as well as the waves.

  2. I love the adventurous moments you captured – and how fun that your mom got to be a part of it! I can’t believe Mr D is only 7. He seems quite tall for his age. He’s gonna be a tall kid!

And the church sign is brilliant. Those signs mark to me a very progressive congregation for some reason!

    1. I think you’re right that he’s going to be tall. When I measured him at 6 and 1/2, he was already the height that Miss O was at 7 and she’s pretty tall too.

I hadn’t thought about what the church signs signal — a very good point!

  3. Oh my goodness. So much to love in one photo splurge…I have comments and upswell,,…smiles…for every single pic! For the sake of narrowing my comment to one, I’m gonna go with the Deception Pass photo. Could you please make a point of taking a photo of Mr. D. in that exact same spot every year, or thereabouts? Like a time capsule collage one day….deep thinker, even as a 7-year old. I can see he’s headed for adventures and accomplishments of all sorts. 💝
