Photos of the Week: August 30

Be an opener of doors.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

We did some backyard camping this week. It was hot (for Seattle) and like most homes in the city, we don’t have AC. So nature’s AC when it cooled down at night felt great!

Cooper the dog felt like he was on the wrong side of the door. The cat didn’t care.

We went to an open house night at the kids’ school. Fifth grade Miss O can now reach the monkey bars while standing flat footed. First grade Mr. D can jump onto the bars without any assistance. Amazing to see how much they’ve grown.

But they still like to wait out from to wave to the garbage man. I imagine from the garbage collector’s point of view, they experience the progress from excited kids to indifferent adults as bittersweet.

The kids had rock climbing camp and also their first introduction to tennis.

It was hot on the tennis court. As the sign of the week says, I think we could have made omelettes. But mostly we were just sweaty.

  1. My daughter who lives on an island not far from you is finding the heat unbearable. I hope it cools down for you soon. The dog staring into the tent is priceless. Of course the cat doesn’t care. The sign says it all.

    1. Thank you, Darlene. It’s already getting cooler – hope that’s true for your daughter as well. Cooper seems to always be on the wrong side of any door he encounters. 🙂 Hope you are having a lovely weekend!

  2. Omelettes, I’ve never heard of a Seattle omelette! Denver omelette yes, Seattle omelette no. The heat has been brutal this summer and I feel for you without AC. Cooper is surely having a FOMO moment and he just wants to be with Miss O and Mr. D. Enjoy your long weekend.

    1. Oh, I”m laughing about the Seattle omelette. Proof that it doesn’t usually get that hot here. 🙂 You are so right about Cooper’s FOMO. Hope you are enjoying a cool weekend at the lake, Clay!

  3. Love the garbage truck picture. Garbage has been a hot topic of discussion in our house this week as our region prepares to transition to a new, automated collection system. We have a choice of 2 sizes of bin for the regular trash. I said we should get the small one. Hubby thinks it’s not big enough. I reminded him that we rarely fill a bag of garbage on our bi-weekly collection day AND I want to continue to park my car in the garage. We requested the small cart. 😉

    1. That’s so interesting, Michelle. Seattle went through a similar situation years back. It’s amazing how much smaller you can go on garbage cans – especially if you can recycle. Sounds like you made the right choice!

  4. There is a casualness – a confidence that is almost a swagger — of Miss O on the wall. Great to see it. Congrats to the parent who made it possible.

      1. Take pride in Miss O, no matter how large your influence and guidance might be, Wynne. Surely you deserve a significant part of the credit.

  5. What a fun week–camping, climbing, and growing up way to fast!! Also, I had the same thought as Dr. Stein–Miss O just eludes so much confidence.

  6. Seems I may have stolen some of the WA cooler weather. It’s been in the mid 70’s here for days and days Wynne 😉 Love how active the kiddos are

  7. Great pics but sorry to hear about the heat. Here in PA it’s been just the opposite- it feels like October over here! The lead pic looks really good- makes me want to do some backyard camping of my own!

  8. We had a brutal summer here in St. Louis, constant heat does with barely a break, until this past week when it cooled down. Still warm, but much more livable.

Your week looks lovely, but gotta watch the outdoor activities in the heat!

      1. The heat has been more that heat waves in so many places. They’re now calling them heat domestic, and they last much longer than previously.

    1. What an astute comment, Michele. Fun fact is that we climb at the gym that was the first indoor gym in North America. It actually moved down the street from where it used to be — and you’re right, changed a lot!!

    1. I was surprised to learn that they have different balls for different levels of learning now, Mary. Wasn’t like that when I started! But I love that you are a lifelong player!!

  9. That chicken omelette signed made me chuckle. I love how you all found a fun way to cool down and down in the heat. The photo of the kids sitting on the steps wrapped up in the starry blanket is a keeper! Hope they are enjoying a smooth transition back to school. We head back on Tuesday!

  10. Your nighttime photo of the tent is beautiful, Wynne, and the one of Cooper sitting outside is adorable. I love the idea of a backyard camping. We did that too when the kids were little. That quote is too funny and I hope it cools down. It’s been hot here yesterday and today, so we’re hanging out inside with fans on, and around 3 pm, we turn on our portable a/c unit that I named Artie (Artie a/c) :). It’s only in the family room, but it offers cool respite that we never had before. Luckily, this summer has been mild. Go figure, the last weekend of the season, the temp climbs. Stay cool! 💞

  11. I’m assuming nowadays most new homes in Seattle are being built with A/C. We didn’t have any either when we bought our first house in Vancouver, but after a year or two, we wasted no time adding a central A/C unit…and that was 25 years ago.

  12. It’s so good to see our kids reaching milestones like hanging from the monkey bars. I think all kids go through the same thing with them, it’s a big achievement when you can hang without assistance. The sign is awesome, as always.
