Sunday Funnies: Dec 11th

Another installment from my dad’s humor cards.

The backstory: My dad was a Presbyterian pastor for 40 years. He kept a well curated stack of humor cards – little stories he heard, found or saw and then typed onto 5×7 cards. Then he wrote in the margins when he used that particular item. His humor was often an easy way to settle in to something deeper – by laughing and thinking about the buried truth in these little nuggets, it paved the way to an open heart.

When we cleaned out his desk after he died 7 years ago, I was lucky enough to stumble on this stack. I pull it out regularly to have a little laugh with my dear Dad. Now when I post one of them, I write my note next to his and it feels like a continuation.

Signs That You’re Over the Hill

You’re sitting on a park bench and a Boy Scout comes up and helps you cross your legs.

You keep repeating yourself.

You light the candles on your birthday cake, and a group of campers form a circle and start singing, “Kumbaya.”

You wonder why you waited so long to take up macrame.

Your insurance company has started sending you their free calendar – a month at a time.

You keep repeating yourself.

At cafeterias, you complain that the gelatin is too tough.

Your new easy chair has more options than your car.

Conversations with people your own age often turn into “dueling ailments.”

It takes a couple of tries to get over a speed bump.

You find yourself beginning to like accordion music.

You begin every other sentence with “Nowadays…”

You run out of breath walking DOWN a flight of stairs.

You keep repeating yourself.

  1. So much fun, Wynne…and I think I might make a combo out of the speed bump giggle and the easy chair quip…the cushier the chair, the harder it is to get my body out of it…and what a laugh that is…kinda like a ‘take two’ over a speed bump. Too funny! xo! 😘

    1. Oh yes – sinking down deep has its implications, doesn’t it? I feel you on that one!! I kinda liked the Boy Scout one although I’m grateful that hasn’t happened to me …. yet. 🙂 XOXO

  2. Oh my, so funny! I liked the calendar one too. The speed bump one gave me a visual, and the accordion one really struck me funny. Always such a fun way to start a Sunday. 😄

    1. I’d forgotten about the accordion one – yes, it’s good too! My kids found an accordion at a secondhand toy store and I nixed the appeal to buy it. I can attest to not liking accordion music…yet. 🙂

    1. lol at the original ones (especially the repeating ones 😀 ) and at the “organ recitals.”

I guess I’m fortunate that as far back as I remember, I had really bad memory, always liked naps, and 20 years ago felt my dentist looked a little too young 😛

  3. omg – a month at a time calendar is hilarious!

Also, repeating oneself. My 96-yo grandmother retells the same story three times in the same conversation. At this point, I just click mute and pop in every now and then with an mmmhmmm and ohhhh okay lol
