I was reminded of this great story from my meditation teacher about how she disturbed the quiet, calm, lovely atmosphere of a yoga class to scream out the door. I thought it was worth sharing again.
“The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” – Dolly Parton
Last night I was out with my kids as they biked, my 5-year-old on her new big bike and my toddler on an old-school Radio Flyer tricycle. I suggested to my daughter that she go all the way around the block on her bike while my son and I worked best on how to make progress on his trike. This was a new freedom for my daughter, riding away from us on the sidewalk and being on her own for a whole block albeit one she knows well because we walk it all the time. Taking those first steps of freedom IS scary! This reminded me of the first time that I sat with a therapy client by myself (a few weeks into my internship). I felt so ready to be on my own…until I actually was! Oh, and LOVE the Dolly quote 🙂

What an interesting comment, Grace! I can imagine how big that must have felt — and that you did a great job.

Well, I certainly can’t claim to have done a good job- I felt so awkward and nervous that all my training would go out the window… but like your daughter did on her bike, I got through it… regrouped…gained my confidence, and was “riding around the block” on my own in no time 🙂

The Dolly quote is wonderful. A huge fan over here. 😊
And I agree that often times there are feelings underneath the larger feeling we are experiencing, or trying to experience. As adults, we have a greater control of them – well, except when someone’s looking into our car! – and it’s great that you help give your kids the space to sort through the undercurrents.

Dolly Parton is an amazing human being!
I’m laughing about the greater control of them – except when someone’s looking into our car. I think we do but sometimes I just disregard what’s underneath until I really think about it. Ah, the joys of being human!
