Foul

Forget injuries. Never forget kindnesses.” – Confucius

This week I got the opportunity to fill in as a lunchtime playground monitor at my daughter’s school. When the kindergartners were out, one of them ran up and said there was a boy that was hurt where they were playing soccer. He was surrounded by a group of interested and supportive onlookers and as I knelt to examine his sore side, I heard:

Boy #1: I don’t think that was a red card. [I assumed they were talking about the foul system in soccer.]

Boy #2: Might not have even been a yellow card.

Boy #3: I was just trying to kick the ball.

Our injured kindergartner was sore but nothing serious and the boys provided a very nice escort to the door so that he could go to the office for some ice. I think they all earned an award for good sportsmanship.

That’s what struck me overall about the kerfuffles I stepped in to help on. Noel thought Clara ignored her. Greyson thought Connor attacked him. David thought Julian yelled in his ear. Maybe it’s because I was thinking about apologies this week, but in all the cases when I got the parties together to talk, the kids weren’t defensive and it made it so easy to talk through. There are so many things kids do well – although maybe kicking the ball and only the ball isn’t one of them!

  1. Amazing what good communication can do. And how interesting between these young ones. Volunteering at my kids’ school years ago was such a joyful pleasure. They may have been there to learn, but it was I who learned so much.

  2. Children seem to remember to be nice to each other and to work it out far quicker than some adults do! Lessons can be learned! 😜

  3. It must be so funny to get a glimpse into your daughter’s school life through these volunteer experiences. I remember a similar post from last year.

Kindergarten is also such a great age. Kids are figuring out the world and things like social norms and rules. But there is still so much purity and innocence and they just overcome things like misunderstandings so much quicker. And the supportive and caring attitude, generally, is so touching to see. 😊

    1. Yes, it is so fun. I can’t do it regularly but I love these little moments of seeing such these delightful young people working it out with each other.

I couldn’t click through to comment on your post yesterday. But not only was I amazed at how incredibly organized and delicious your meals were, I’m sorry about the week of no school for T. Those darn drippy noses. It’s SO frustrating to get those calls especially in the middle of a busy week. Hope your Ma is hanging in there.

But yay – spring break!! I hope you all enjoy. I know you will make the most of it!! Sending my best to you!

      1. Thanks Wynne. I deleted the post. Lol. Speaking of foul, it felt a little fowl (see what I did there!) even for my blog. 😆😆😆 I didn’t realize people could still see it after I shortly deleted it after posting.

We’re having a great spring break so far and more on that later.

        Take care for now!
