Photos of the Week: December 14

The job of the artist is to always deepen the mystery.” – Sir Francis Bacon

Isn’t it amazing how kids can tilt and bend?

Kids and pottery. What could go wrong? Actually, everything went great.

Doing pottery reminds me of a story I heard about living life according to the ancient tradition of pottery. First you have to envision how you want it to be. And then you paint layers with colors that do not match what they’ll be in the end. Finally, only after the intense heat of the oven does the finish product appear.

Cooper getting photo ready — and then doing his best duck impression.

Cooper with attitude. And Cooper with the mark of a Playfinder. Now he thinks he’s a demi-dog. That’s a Moana 2 joke for anyone that’s not hanging with the Disney crowd… ๐Ÿ™‚

Photos of kids with cameras — it’s a little meta, isn’t it?

The signs of the week. The first was made by Mr. D because he put a wet floor sign on his Christmas list. I told him we could make one. [note to self: teach kids to dry floor instead of just putting a sign up.]

  1. Oh geez…all of these pics are fab…but I gotta admit. Cooper “in profile” with a duck? He looks like the subject a painter would take on. “Still Life in Profile – Cooper and Friend”. Your furry boy is such a poser, isn’t he? Much love to all! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ

  2. OMG, can I have Cooper? JK, of course, but that profile with a duck and his laid-back ‘tude is too much. ๐Ÿ™‚ I took a 3 week pottery class about 500 years ago, and absolutely loved working with my hands and the whole glazing process. I’m sure your children felt the pride that comes with a finished piece. โค๏ธ

    1. You are such a treasure, Melanie! You always make me laugh! You totally nailed Cooper’s ‘tude and he’s got oodles of it.

Pottery is so fun, isn’t it? We should get the pieces back this week and I’m looking forward to seeing the hamster with blue ears. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I remember those days. Hot, very hot when I was rushing around with the kids. And the painting. It looks like they had an awesome time. Thanks for sharing. Take care, Julian

  4. I’m chuckling because Mr. D put a wet floor sign on his wish list! And his sign serves the purpose quite well. The face of the stick figure does a great job of conveying the surprise and embarrassment and pain in the derriere caused by falling because of a wet floor ๐Ÿคช

  5. That pics of the kids flying off the slide just radiate pure joy. Cooper seems to be in doggie spa heaven with Mr D too! Hope you enjoy your week ahead. Itโ€™s the last week of school for us before the holiday break!

  6. As expected, your photos deliver. A busy weekend of temptations I could not resist, but overall, I enter the last teaching week of ’24 unscathed. I could use Mr. D’s wet floor sign, we have been channelling your weather this weekend. Have a great week. Stay well, peace.

  7. I wish I could still tilt and bend like that! When I was a young’un, I had a weird way of sitting where I bent my legs back (actually, if you picture the letter W, that’s pretty much what it looked like). Oh, to have that kind of flexibility again!

    1. Oh, that hurts just picturing that W! Yikes!! Funny thing that the kids doctor told me. When we are young we have more than the 209 (?) bones in the adult more — because they haven’t fused yet. That’s my excuse for the inflexibility. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. “Demi-dogโ€, thatโ€™s hilarious, Wynne! Someone in my house gets irritated when people walk on wet floors, so I need to get one of Mr. Dโ€™s signs. Send me the Amazon link so I can buy one. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Oh, and I totally get the drawing on the signโ€”it perfectly illustrates the reaction of the person in my house when people walk on wet floors. ๐Ÿคฃ

  9. Love these! “Teach kids to dry floor instead of just putting a sign up.” ๐Ÿ˜†

Pottery is my new thing! A friend got me into slab building on my kitchen table. Super fun to create the pieces and then to paint them. When she told me I could dilute the underglazes and use like watercolors, that changed everything!

    Happy Holidays!
