The Empathy of Experience

“Walk long enough and we all trade places.” – Mark Nepo

About a year and a half ago some neighbors that I knew by sight but not by name stopped to tell me of the sudden death of their dear dog. Nine months later as I rode home from saying goodbye to my beloved Biscuit, I thought of them and a fresh wave of understanding and grief washed over me. Every loss in my life has also brought the gift of empathy and understanding and for that I’m grateful.

That being said, I’m glad Miss O’s first dog is wooden so she doesn’t have to learn that for a long time!
